Spring Has Sprung 2010

Spring has arrived and it's time to dust off the winter blues and get your caravan or motor home in tip top shape for some summer fun in the great Australian sun.

Here are 18 tips to make sure everything is in order before you get those wheels rolling again.

Preparing For Your Trip
Before leaving home you may want to consider the following:
  • Make arrangements for mail forwarding
  • Set up phone or online banking
  • Check that your car/4WD has the legal towing capacity to tow the weight of your caravan
  • Have a mechanic carry out a thorough service and safety check on your tow vehicle and caravan including adjusting electric brakes correctly (if fitted) and tyre pressures.
  • Carry enough cash to cover repairs/locksmith/tyres/ etc as there may be times when you are not able to access a ATM or an eftpos machine may not be working (you may not want to write down your credit card details for a stranger to use later on) $1000 should be enough
  • Don't overload your car and caravan - stay within the legal maximums
  • Take enough warm winter clothes - even summer nights around the camp fire can be very cold
  • Carry a mobile phone - Telstra Next G has the best coverage but may not work in more remote areas
  • Consider having a UHF radio installed in your vehicle which will allow you to talk with other caravan owners and truck drivers on the road
  • Carry fresh drinking water - at least 25 litres is recommended. Beware of drinking bore water as it may cause tummy upset or a skin rash from the sulphur it may contain
  • Torch, Camera and spare batteries
  • A daily dairy or travel journal
  • Fire extinguishers (1 for the caravan and 1 for the car) and a fire blanket
  • First aid kits (1 for the caravan and 1 for the car)
  • Up to date Medication List with details of dosages
  • Photocopy of Drivers Licence, Medicare Card, Pension Card, rego papers
  • Consider Spare radiator and heater hoses, pre-packed bearings for caravan, caravan jack and wooden blocks/chocks
  • Always Lock Up your vehicles!
    • See you on the road
    • Safe Travels :-)
