We were treated to a performance by Mr Dean Doyle with his band 'Sophistication' and even got to chat with them after the show. Dean is a multi talented lead vocalist who also plays trombone and trumpet. He was accompanied by the very talented Narelle Harris on piano and vocal harmonies, and Paul Belsham on drums who is an ex kiwi from Auckland, and a lead guitarist who was very talented also, but his name escapes me now - my apologies.
It was a great show and we enjoyed many great songs from the 50's
including:- Rock Around The Clock
- Heartbreak Hotel
- Love Me Tender
- Peggy Sue
- See You Later Alligator
- and Oh Boy
We also learned that although Elvis
dominated the hit parade in Australia between 1956 and 1959 he didn't have a No. 1 hit in the 50's. The ones that topped the charts in Australia were Bill Haley, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Teresa Brewer, Mitch Miller, Doris Day, Frankie Lane and Johnnie Ray.Looking back, we also learned that:
- NSW was the first state in Australia to provide long service leave in 1951
- Devastating bushfires ravaged Victoria and the worst floods in history hit NSW in 1952
- Oil and bauxite were discovered in 1953
- Queen Elizabeth came to visit in 1954
- The one millionth migrant arrived in Australia in 1955
- Olympic games begin and Television is launched on 1956
- Ansett Airlines is formed by the merger of 3 other airlines in 1957
- Qantas begins the first ever around the world service in 1958
- Our population reaches 10 million
